Some weddings have a little bit of everything, and Sam and Jess's wedding at Ocean View in Gower, South Wales was definitely one of them.
Beautiful scenery, a brilliant group of friends and family, plenty of laughter and even an unexpected visit to a festival beside Weobley Castle ruins. It's safe to say this wasn't your average wedding day!
Set against the incredible landscape of the Gower Peninsula, Ocean View was the perfect place for Sam and Jess to celebrate. The whole day had such a relaxed, happy atmosphere, with everyone just enjoying being together and making the most of every moment.
As a South Wales wedding videographer, these are exactly the kinds of weddings I love capturing. Days where the couple's personalities shine through, things don't always follow a perfectly planned schedule, and the best moments often happen when nobody is expecting them.
A Wedding That Was All About Having Fun
One thing that stood out to me about Sam and Jess's wedding was just how much fun everyone was having. There was a real sense of enjoyment from start to finish. Whether it was the conversations between guests, the laughter during the celebrations or those little moments between Sam and Jess, everything felt natural and full of life.
That's something I always look for when filming weddings.
Of course, the big moments are important. The ceremony, the speeches and all those traditional parts of the day deserve to be captured beautifully, but I also want to remember the atmosphere around them.
The laughter that breaks out unexpectedly, the reactions from friends, the little exchanges between family members and the moments that nobody has planned. Those are the things that give a wedding film its personality.
And Sam and Jess certainly gave me plenty to work with!
An Unexpected Trip to a Festival
Now, this was definitely a first…
During the time we'd set aside for Sam and Jess's couple portraits, we decided to head over to a local festival that was happening beside some historic castle ruins (Weobley Castle)
Not exactly the location you'd normally expect to find a bride and groom on their wedding day, but that's what made it so brilliant.
Rather than spending the whole time posing for traditional wedding portraits, we had the opportunity to capture something a little different. The festival brought a completely different atmosphere to the footage, while the castle ruins provided a beautiful historic backdrop.
More importantly, it was an opportunity for Sam and Jess to enjoy a bit of time together and have some fun away from the main celebrations.
I've always believed that wedding videography shouldn't feel like a separate shoot that's been squeezed into your day. It should feel like part of the experience.
Whether that means taking a walk along the coast, exploring somewhere meaningful to you or, in this case, finding yourselves at a festival, those moments often produce some of the most genuine footage.
And I think that's what made this little adventure so memorable.
The Gower Peninsula: An Incredible Place for a Wedding Film
Having grown up and worked in South Wales, I've always appreciated how lucky we are to have places like Gower so close to home.
It's an area that offers something completely different depending on where you go.
You've got dramatic coastal scenery, quiet countryside, historic locations and some of the most recognisable beaches in Wales.
For anyone planning a wedding in Swansea or Gower, that variety is a huge part of the appeal.
It also makes a big difference when creating a wedding film.
I love using the surrounding landscape to help establish a sense of place. Not simply because the scenery looks beautiful, but because the location becomes part of the memories associated with the day.
When Sam and Jess watch their wedding film in years to come, I want them to remember more than just what happened.
I want them to remember being there.
The surroundings, the atmosphere, the people and all the little details that made the experience unique.
That's why I always try to incorporate the character of a wedding venue and its surroundings without allowing the scenery to overshadow the people at the centre of the story.
More Than Just the Big Moments
One of the things I've learned through filming weddings is that you can never really predict which moments will mean the most to someone afterwards.
It might be something obvious, like walking down the aisle or hearing a particularly meaningful speech.
But just as often, it can be something much smaller.
A parent smiling in the background. Two friends laughing together. A quick hug before the ceremony. A moment between the couple when they think nobody is watching.
These are the details that can easily disappear into the busyness of a wedding day.
My job is to notice them.
When I approach a wedding, I'm not trying to turn the day into a film production. I'm there to observe, anticipate and capture what's happening as naturally as possible.
That approach suited Sam and Jess's wedding perfectly.
There was so much happening throughout the day, and the atmosphere was so relaxed, that it allowed me to concentrate on documenting the celebrations as they unfolded.
The result is a wedding film that isn't just about how beautiful everything looked, but about how much everyone enjoyed being part of it.
A Wedding Film That Feels Like Sam & Jess
Every couple is different, and I think their wedding film should reflect that.
Some weddings are emotional and intimate. Others are full of energy, laughter and big celebrations. Most are a mixture of everything.
What I loved about filming Sam and Jess was that there was such a strong sense of fun throughout their day.
It wasn't about trying to create perfect moments for the camera.
It was about enjoying the experience, spending time with the people they love and celebrating their marriage in a way that felt right for them.
That's ultimately what I want my wedding films to represent.
Something cinematic and beautifully put together, but never at the expense of the genuine moments that make the day personal.
Sam and Jess, thank you for having me along to capture your wedding at Ocean View. From the celebrations at the venue to our little adventure at the castle festival, it was such an enjoyable day to be part of.
I hope your wedding film always brings back those memories and reminds you just how much fun everyone had celebrating with you.
